I want to start maintaining this blog again, but need a place to begin. I tried just writing a regular post... but it just didn't feel right. Instead, for this post only, I'll diverge a bit with a slightly off-topic idea. An interesting question posed in an entry from The Morning After: Should Sammy Sosa be in the Hall of Fame?

Personally, I'm of the belief that the Hall has too many inhabitants and that the requirements for admission are too lax. However, judging by the current policies, we well er... judge Slammin' Sammy's credentials.

Sosa's career statistics are quite something. From a slugging standpoint, he would seem to be a shoe-in. With 604 (and counting) homeruns and a .534 slugging percentage, conventional wisdom would say that he has paved a path to the Cooperstown. Unfortunately, he seems to have a few drawbacks.

Firstly, if you take away the slugging, there isn't much left. The Adam Dunn of the 90's, if you will. In his 17 years in the bigs, he's only produced a mediocre average of .273, and OBP of .344 (which of course includes all those intentional walks).

His second downfall is the simple fact that he's never had the complete limelight. His hay-day was coincidentally also that of Mark McGwire, who eclipsed much of Sammy's work. Shortly after McGwire's retirement, Barry Bonds shattered Sosa's dreams of the homerun throne by by way of steroids.

Steroids, however opens an entirely new can of worms. Lemme give you a quick before and after. You draw your own conclusions.

Obviously, something changed. I sincerely feel that steroid use should be a major factor when considering a player for the Hall of Fame. Hopefully the voters will agree with me. Will Sammy end up in Cooperstown? Most likely. But should he?

Opinions are like assholes. Everyone's got one.

Crennel's Future in Question?

It has come to my attention that many Browns fans feel a change is in order. Apparently, Romeo Crennel doesn't have many fans. Granted, he may not be the second coming. In fact, I know he's not. But I also know that a neither a new front office nor a coach is going to make things better for our beloved Brownies.

If you recall... the first thing Romeo did in Cleveland was switch us over to a 3-4 defense.... not an easy task. Then he came up with the Browns first immediately productive draft pick in their 10 year history with Kamerion Wimbley. In that very same off-season, he signed numerous free-agents who brought some desperately needed experience to the team.

Now let's look at this and reflect for a few moments. Think back to 2 years ago. If I told you that we could get a coach that could improve our defense, draft bona-fide talent, and sign pro-bowl caliber free agents, you would have hopped right on that bandwagon. I guarantee it. Now, however... you're having second thoughts?

I have to say... that's pretty ignorant. Injuries? Underperformance? A losing record? Come on... we both know that's not gonna change with a new head coach.

In fact, a new head coach would most likely wipe out the 3-4 (AKA another year of adjustment) we've worked so long to achieve. Plus, based on past experience, he would probably draft a injury-prone bum in the first round next year. And if you can think of better off-season moves in terms of free agents, you have my vote for the position.

If anybody here can explain to me what exactly a new coach can do for this team that Crennel isn't already doing... please, feel free to catch me up to speed.

Peralta in the Doghouse

Supposedly, Wedge simply wanted to take a good look at Hector Luna. It had nothing to do with Jhonny Peralta's performance this year. It's all a big misunderstanding.

Any way you put it, Peralta was a bystander in three games this week, seeing no action whatsoever. And according to the educated English of Jhonny-P himself, "One day or two days is fine. Three days is not so good. Apparently, that 24 hour difference has made him take the rest personally. Like maybe it's punishment for poor performance.

You know it's in the back of every Tribe fan's mind. Peralta signs the big contract in the off-season, so he no longer has to prove himself. Maybe he slacks off a bit. He's got his money, he's got his position... what does he have to worry about?

I dunno... just off the top of my head... a 40 point drop in batting average, and a homerun count sliced in half. I don't see anyone else to blame...

You don't like 3 days off, Jhonnyboy? Maybe the Royals were just seeing the ball well. Maybe, heaven forbid, Jeremy Sowers is human. The Tribe had decided that this would be his last start for the season, and it appears that it was the right time to do so. He went five, threw 89 pitches, and gave up 4 in the Indians 5-3 loss to the Royals.

You can't blame the kid. Prior to that game, he'd been 6-0 in his last nine starts, never giving up more than 2 runs in a single game. Did I mention he's a 23 year old rookie? Nobody expects him to be the next Johaan (yet), so he's due for a loss sooner or later. Unfortunately, it had to be in his last start of the season.

The official reasoning is that Wedge didn't want to risk injury, or over-working the kid in a non-contesting season. Better safe then sorry... and hopefully a better next year for the rest of the team.

Braylon...........

I can't believe you dropped that pass. It might have cost us a W. I guess it kinda depends on how streaky Charlie got... but Braylon.... that was awful.

Short and sweet. That is the letter I'm sending to the Browns Clubhouse this week. In case none of you saw the play, let me explain myself. The final drive of the game, Cleveland down 5. After two sacks, Charlie fights his way back to a manageable 3rd down. He drops back, hits a streaking Edwards (in the chest, I might add), and Braylon completely misses it, deflecting it into the hands of a nearby DB. Makes me wonder if maybe Braylon should be a DB... especially with our secondary.

You can't put all the blame on him, but... if I was a 6'5" 230 lb. wideout, I would have caught it. That's all I'll say.

It started out pretty ugly, but towards the end (but not at the end as you may be able to tell), the Browns showed signs of life. Charlie looked good for a 5th game QB, especially considering the unusual amounts of pressure the defense was bringing.

But... it's Cleveland, and optimistic news does not come without an equal and opposite force. Joe Jurevicius broke his ribs on a 25 yard pass that shouldn't have even happened... as it was called back on a holding penalty.

The Gods don't like these hometown boys... Bentley, now my main man Joe. I guess that means Charlie's next... knock on wood.

The Bush Mystery...

Reggie seems destined for greatness. From his championship years at USC, to the later revealed high school "Bush Tape," to the New Orleans Saints. It's clear that the Saints are centering their offense around this kid... and the outcome of the game rides on him...

The Browns shotty secondary won't come into play too much here in week 1 mainly for two reasons. The only passing threat NO has is Joe Horn, and Drew Brees is recovering from a dislocated shoulder, preventing the long ball. The only 50 yard pass he'll throw is a screen to this Reggie Bush guy we've all heard so much about.

Without the passing game, and an unexperienced running game, I sure hope Cleveland can pull this one off. Especially with all of the "Young Guns" healthy... we can finally watch this offense unload on somebody. I can't remember the last time we scored 40 points. Or even half that, really. And we probably still won't get it.

I'm Still Here...

Sorry I haven't updated lately... since classes started back up, I've been trying to find a schedule that worked out for me. We actually have all our weapons (save LeCharles) for once. And Jerome Harrison looks better every time he touches the ball.

The Beacon Journal wrote a damn good article wrapping up the preseason here. I'm actually excited about this team. That's all I got for now... kinda crunched on time. Just wanted to let everyone know I'm still here, and that I'm workin on a schedule for my posts.

There's NOT Always Next Year

Ever since the Jake was built, along with that team of youngsters (who aren't so young anymore), Cleveland has lived by the philosophy, "There's always next year." Well, I think I can be pretty confident when I say that we all found out the hard way that this wasn't true. The mid-to-late 90's team that centered around Kenny Lofton, Manny Ramirez, Jim Thome, Albert Belle, Charles Nagy, and the rest of those Cleveland legends seemed destined for a Championship. That core stayed together for years, and Jesus, we got close. So, what's different about this team? Won't this core stick around until we can watch fate crush our dreams and laugh at our languished hearts once more?

No. It won't. And believe it or not... that's bad. The closest Cleveland ever gets to greatness is depression. So, I'll take that.

For the Indians, there is only next year. After a specatacularly dissapointing season, if the Tribe doesn't make the playoffs next year, the team will fall apart. And... If they don't go deep into the playoffs the year after that... the team will fall apart. The next two seasons for the Indians are the most crucial of the last decade.

Two of Cleveland's most important contracts expire in 2008. And guess what? If we can't give them a taste (or more like a good-sized helping) of victory in the next 24 months, Travis Hafner and C.C. Sabathia will leave to find a team that will. Know how I know that? C.C. admits that the World Series is on his mind.

That's the difference between the 90's team and the team of today. The old guys won right away. If you win, players stay. Simple as that. It's time for the rookies to step up. If they don't do it now, Cleveland won't be a place for them to do it later.

Jerome Harrison Injured

Just joking. But it's bound to happen soon, right? Ever since the Browns 20-16 win over the Lions, everybody's been talking about this rookie, Jerome Harrison. Even Jerome Harrison himself. Why, you ask? Well, when you put up numbers like that as a 5th round pick, your bound to get interviewed... When you tell the press that you, a 5th rounder, should have won the Heisman, people are bound to talk.

Sure, maybe he's that good (I seriously doubt it), and some self-confidence can help teams out. But, then again, it's Cleveland.

Anybody remember the last Brown's player to self-inflate his ego? Oh that's right... Kellen Winslow Jr. And two severe injuries later, he's done little to back it up. So, that leaves me to believe that a Jerome Harrison injury is emminent. Maybe that whole Suggs fiasco will actually help fill the impending roster-hole.

Fire Shapiro?

The Tribe suffered yet another walkoff hit, but this time, to the hands of the Devil Rays. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that makes 4 walkoff losses in the last 2 weeks? Maybe 3 weeks. Either way. Too many. What's the reasoning for these heart-wrenching losses? Two words. Mark. Shapiro.

July 20 - Bob Wickman traded to the Braves for Max Ramirez (single-A)
July 20 - August 5 - Fausto Carmona records four losses and three blown saves within the span of a week. All three blown saves were walk-offs.
August 6 - Jason Davis made closer. Picks up first and only save on the Cleveland Indians roster.
August 7 - Mark Shapiro sends out letter to season-ticket holders admitting that he is currently making moves with next season in mind.
August 18 - Jason Davis blows a save, once again, in walkoff fashion.

How many walkoffs did we have before we traded Wickman? One. Since? Four. Way to go Shapiro. Even if he is making moves 'for next year,' don't you think that this is a little too far? He's ripping apart the team, the fanbase, and his job security. It absolute crushes a team (especially the starter) when you go into the ninth just to lose it in the final seconds. And I don't know how much more we can take.

Is it time to fire Shapiro? Do we give him one more year? Do you think he's playing it right? Tell me. He's teetering on the edge in my opinion.

Oh. Over his three seasons in the NFL, he had missed a total of 5 games. He comes to Cleveland. And as fate would have it, he is about to double that stat, and the season hasn't even started yet.

Alonzo, somewhere, at some time, has failed some drug test. It's not known when or where it happened, but of course the league waits to punish him until he is on the Browns. Oh wait... not just on the Browns, but starting as a 3rd string Center. His punishment: 4 games of suspension.

Does anybody find it interesting that the word of his failed test doesn't come out until two centers are tossed aside and a team needs him more then he has ever been needed before? I know it, you know it, Pronk knows it, Shapiro knows it, and all of us are gearing up for next year's (hopeful) contention. Shapiro has already made some moves with the '07 season in mind... Bringing up Marte, Sowers, and Garko... testing out Victor at first... finding out that Carmona can't close... trading for young talent like this Shin Soo-Choo guy (who I love by the way). It's been an up and down season, and we hardly have the team any of us invisioned a year ago. But so far, me's likes what me's sees.

That leaves me to wonder, what else do we need to do to become a legitimate American League threat next year? Obviously, we need a closer. I might've said this before, but I still think Fausto Carmona has the stuff to be a MLB closer. Maybe not now, maybe not next year, but remember... he's only 22... and his ERA was 1.90 in triple-A. So, an interim closer who'll convert hopefully 85% of the save oppurtunities. An older guy, that'll sign cheap because he knows the end is coming.

We've got a major problem at first. As much as I've liked Ryan Garko's numbers, we really need to move Victor to first due to his arm, or lack thereof. Then where do we put Garko? Interesting question... If he continues to put up the numbers he has, then we could give him his time at first, then trade him at next year's All-Star Break for a.......

Second Baseman is really a hole needing filled next year. Ronnie wasn't a super-star, but he got the job done. Without him, we're stuck with a Inglett/Luna platoon, which to be frank, sucks balls. I don't think either will ever have real success in the majors, and this is one of the most important areas to improve if we want to be a October Classic contender.

According to the Dolans', we've got money to spend.(I def suggest you read that one.) So we could definitely sign some players in the off-season that could offer substantial improvement to the team. Maybe a replacement for Jason Michaels? I don't really know. I like who we've got. For the most part. At this point, it's all about how you play the cards in your hand.

Any suggestions on aquisitions this off-season? Leave one. This next season should prove to be one of the most exciting of the last 5 or 6 years.

Suggs Fails the Physical

The Browns just can't get anything going this pre-season. Freak injuries, sluggish offense, and now... we can't trade our own players. As of yesterday, it was official. Lee Suggs was traded to the Jets for DB Derrick Strait.

I was favorable of this deal. Why do the Brownies need so many running backs? Especially when two of them are starting quality. Barring the split back option, which the Browns haven't done for years, there is none. It's just a waste of money to have two players for the same reason. Plus, with Suggs out of the picture, we could see what kind of stuff this Jerome Harrison guy has.

But no. Cleveland's curse lives on. The news was released this afternoon that Suggs failed the physical, and both players would return to their respective teams. It wasn't released as to why he failed the test, but now I'm wondering if he's even fit to play for us...

Is Charlie Frye "The One"?

Everybody's so excited about this young, strapping quarterback. Should they be? It's gonna be his first full season. Nobody really knows what to expect out of him. Let's look at a few of the reasons everybody is hyped about him, and find out if they're legit.

1) He's from Cleveland Okay. He is. He's a life-long Browns fan. Does that mean that he's the second-coming? Let me guess. Now your gonna play the Bernie Kosar card. He was from Cleveland, and did great things. But I guess that couldn't just be because he was a great QB.

2) He's a Leader How do you know that? He's played a handful of games. My guess is people tend to believe this because the team seems to have faith in him. Maybe they do, which is evident in Aaron Shea's "People believe in him. He's got 'it,' whatever 'it' is. He's the leader of this offense and we're just following him." Except for the fact that he said that last season... about Trent Dilfer. I guess Leadership isn't everything.

3) His College Career I'll make this one short and sweet. College is not the NFL. Think of the countless Heisman winners that come into the league and flop. And Heisman winners play top ranked opponents. Nothing against any Akron U alma maters, but it's the MAC for crying out loud.

Am I saying that Charlie is definitely not the one? I dunno. I'm saying it's too early to put the weight of the struggling Browns franchise on his shoulders.

Some Tidbits Before Bed

Some friends of mine recently went to Italy on vacation. I dunno how it came up, but somehow, they found out that in Europe, LeBron James was a nobody. Hard to believe? A little. Now, however, because of his Team USA play, he's startin' to get some overseas publicity, especially in China.

In other news, Gary Baxter, injured in the pre-season match against the Eagles, isn't as "fine" as he thought, but should be back by the beginning of the season. Daylon McCutcheon on the other hand, will most likely miss the first few games.

Unfortunately, I have to get up real early tomorrow, so I'm signin' off.

A Grand Opening - Tribe Scores 11 in First

Ummm... Let me put this as simply as I can. The first 10 batters the Indians sent to the plate got on base. AND SCORED. In a monstrous, 33 minute ordeal, the Tribe put up 11 runs in the first inning, and went on to win it 13-0. As if that weren't enough, Travis Hafner hit his 6th Grand Slam of the season, tying the all-time record with Don Mattingly in 1987.

Jeremy Sowers pitched 6 scoreless innings and improved to 3-0 over his last 5 starts. Carmona came in for a 1,2,3,4 ninth (he walked one batter), and seems to be regaining confidence. I still think he'll be our closer in a year or less.

I believe I said a few days ago that the bats were starting to heat up. If a 6 game winning streak isn't evidence of that (especially with our bullpen), I don't know what is. And to think that we should've won those games against Boston... this streak should be double digits by now.

Cavs Quiet Off-Season Designed?

There was an article in the Akron Beacon Journal today about the quiet offseason that has kept fans in anxious suspense. Apparantly, Danny Ferry has it all planned out.

The Cavs are getting dangerously close the salary cap, which is bad for multiple reasons. But most importantly, is the luxury tax. For every dollar over the limit, you're taxed a dollar. This taxed money goes to your competitors who are underneath the tax line (which is currently 65.4 million). So basically, you lose money, and help your opponents.

This is why Danny Ferry and the Cavs have been so quiet recently. The man behind the Disappointment Zone has written an excellent article on exactly how this tax line has translated to few moves this off-season. Topics range from free-agents, to Drew Gooden, to Eric Snow and Big Z. I suggest you check it out.

Out of Town This Weekend...

Or, for you guys, I guess you could say in town. I'm makin' one of my treks from Indy to Cleveland this weekend, so if there's only a post or so a day... that's why. I'll try my best. But friends, family, and one of the Tribe games tomorrow will have me pretty tied down.

In case you hadn't heard, the Browns got beat last night. It started early, and continued late. Just 5 pitches into the game, the Angels starter, Ervin Santana was struck to the ground on a Jason Michaels line drive. Oddly, he was credited with the loss.

By the top of the sixth, Cliff Lee was still going strong at 77 pitches, while the Angels pitching staff had thrown 144. Lee finished after 7 innings, relieved by Carmona. It would only ever happen here.

Winslow Returns to Football after Two Years

I would hope you knew that the Browns are playing the Eagles tonight in their first matchup of the year. It's pre-season, so it doesn't really matter that much. I always see this time of year as the team's tryouts for guys over 30. But seeing as how we hardly have any, I've got a couple of things that I want to keep my eye on.

1) Alonzo Ephraim. Until this center we signed passes his physical and such (dunno whats taking so long), Alozo is all we got. It'll be interesting to see if Alonzo wants the job as much as he says.

2) Kellen Winslow. After two years on the sidelines, he's back, and not better than ever (but apparantly still better than every TE out there). I don't think he can live up to his own hype, but then again, I've only seen him play 2 games.

3) Travis Wilson. Who? He's the third round WR we drafted this year. He battled some injuries in college, which made his draft fall quite a few spots, but if he can stay healthy (In Cleveland? Yeah, right.), he should be a good aquisition.

Time to see what the Young Guns can do.

That's Called Pitching - Westbrook Throws Shutout

Notice that when we win, we don't use our bullpen. Hmmm... Jake Westbrook improved his record to 9-7 as he threw a complete game shutout against the Angels. It wasn't a pretty one, as he was consistently getting into trouble, but Westbrook managed to work out of it each time.

The Tribe took up a three run lead in the second, and added one in the fourth when Joe Inglett drew a bases loaded walk. Jake finished strong facing just 12 hitters in the final four innings of the game to close out the 4-0 victory.

I guess this is Shapiro's grand scheme. Get young pitchers who can, every once in a while, win a game by themselves. Let me tell you somethin buddy. That won't work. God, I hope these youngsters in Buffalo get good. Shapiro made the move early this afternoon, trading Todd Hollandsworth to the Reds for (I always love this) a player to be named later OR cash.

So basically, we get nothing. And when we do get something, it'll just be another AAA player, or a few extra bucks. Which is basically, nothing. I take Shapiro's latest move as putting up the white flag, throwing in the towel, folding, giving up, whatever you want to call it, on the season at hand. And if he doesn't get some veterans (quality vets, I might add), in the off-season, he might have already given up on next year as well.

And to think I had such high hopes for this years season 6 months ago. Upon return, Hallen has the possibility of being fined, or being welcomed bach with open arms (that's how desperate we are for a center).

Either way, the brown's starting center for the time being was an unemployed man with a pregnant fiancee living in Alabama just 2 weeks ago. Not neccessarily a bad thing, success stories have happened before, but it does show the Brown's desperate need to fill the position.

Tribe Loses 5-4 Despite Sower's Pitching

Rafael Betancourt wasn't his usual self tonight. In one inning pitched, he gave up two hits and two walks, along with the go ahead run in the eighth. The real mistake however, lied in the mental lapse of Victor Martinez. Garret Andersen and Vladimir Guerrero took off for a double steal, and Victor neglected to throw to third for the out that would have ended the inning. Instead, he fired to second, not in time, and Adam Kennedy knocked in the winning run a few pitches later.

Jeremy Sowers went seven strong innings giving up three earned, but that type of outing is beginning to be expected of him. The guy that left me with the biggest impression was this Mastny character. He comes on in the ninth, and strikes out two batters in a row with a devastating hook, and forces Vlad to ground weakly to first. Where has this guy been in the past???

Blake on DL; Brown's Hallen injured

What a day to get back into the business. I gots good news and bad news. More good than bad, but not so much bad that the good looks bad. Got it? Well I'll start with the bad, go to the worse, and end with the good, just to keep you reading.

Casey Blake was put on the DL again today on account of a sprained ankle. He suffered the injury avoiding a double play on second. Ryan Garko was called up as his replacement.

Bob Hallen, the Brown's second string center is experiencing back spasms, and the injury was released today as well. This puts the Browns in a crippling situation, especially if Hallen can't recover before the season starts. After shelling out the megamoney on centers this off-season, two injuries have set them back quite a ways. The Browns finished the day with Alonzo Ephraim, signed a week ago as the No. 1 Center snapping to Charlie.

On a more positive note, the Indians start Jeremy Sowers tonight against the Angels. Moreover, the Tribe made a big step to resign Cliff Lee today as he agreed to a 3-year deal worth a guaranteed 14 mil. For Real.

Yeah. I know it's been a decade since I posted last. And I know the people that used to read this probably haven't looked here for at least several months. But I'm here to tell you that I'm back this time. For real. I'm gonna stick around. Right now, you may be asking yourself, 'Why should I trust a guy who abandoned me and my hopes in the middle of the NFL season?'

That's a good question.

My only response is that you're gonna have to take my word for it. Because I've got something bigger planned. That's why. I can't tell you what (only me and the CIA knows), but this blog will help me achieve it. So I'm here to stay. And I hope all of you will come back.

News to follow soon.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://insidecleveland.blogspot.com/2006/08/im-back-for-real.html' title='I'm Back. I'm gonna keep writing, daily I hope. I've got a really busy 2 weeks coming up, so no promises... But also no more 2 week breaks. Big Z had a montser game, and racked up 28 points. The real story of the day though is actually a question. How in the world did the Cavs pull this off?

It's a good question. My pregame strategy was to eliminate the Clipper's 3-ball. That didn't work. They shot over 50% from the outside. Obviously, if we had held them, the game would've been a blowout. But despite the lack of defense, the Cavaliers pulled it out.

With free throws. Thank God for free throws. We outscored L.A. 41-26 from the charity stripe. Thus, the "W". Unfortunately, we can't count on free throws every game, so something still needs to be done about long-ball defense.

The Key To Beating The Clippers

Stop The Three-Ball

I read some stats. There's a striking characteristic relating all of the Cavaliers losses thus far. When the Cavs lose, the opposing team hits the long ball, and hits it a lot. In fact, they make it 56.7% of the time

When the Cavs win, they have held opponents to a more reasonable 35% from beyond the arc. The kind of guy that will really get through to his team at the right times. Like after a horrible performance against the Pacers.

Well Mike, it's time to show me the money. The Cavaliers (undefeated at home) play the T'Wolves (winless on the road) at The Q tonight. It's up to the next few games to show people that the Cavs were not a one-hit-wonder.

They need to get back up on the horse and win the next 2 or 3. My advice for the Cavs tonight? Think about Thursday's game, and do the complete opposite (see my post "3 Easy Steps to Winning").

Oh yeah. And some points from LeBron wouldn't hurt.

Indians Off-season Decisioins

First off, let me begin by saying that the Pacers lost to the Hawks last night. A little consolation, maybe? Not for me.

The Indians have some work to do before next season. The most probable trade at the moment would give Bob Howry to the Orioles for closer B.J. Ryan.

Rumor has it that they are also looking at Brian Giles to replace Casey Blake. In other news, Jim Thome will play A.L. Central baseball again... for the Chicago White Sox.

The Red Sox just might be in the market to trade Manny Ramirez. He wants to be traded, and the three teams he's mentioned are the Angels, Mariners, and Indians. Personally, I don't really want him.

Cavs and T'Wolves tonight. I realized exactly what the Cavs were trying to do. They were using the following 3 steps to win the ballgame...

Shoot 3-Pointers - This is easily the most important thing to do when you are down by 20 points. When shooting 2's, you need 10 STRAIGHT SHOTS to make up that 20 point deficit. However, when you shoot them long-balls, you only need 7. Saving 3 shots is crucial if you want to win a basketball game.

Drop Passes - A little known, yet successful key to winning a big game is to drop psses. This gives the opposing team a false sense of security, and makes them feel as though they don't have to try as hard. Thus, giving you the advantage.

Don't Play Defense - This is a similar step to number 2, but effective nonetheless. If you don't play defense, the opponent will not have to try so hard to score. In turn, this will cause them to play worse defense themselves. Now, you can score as many points as you want.

WHAT!?!! You mean the Cavs lost the game using these tactics? By 22!?!! But how!?!! These steps are foolproof!!!

Thanksgiving in Indianapolis

Well, I came over from Indianapolis to the Akron area to spend Thanksgiving... But... The Cavs decided to head over to the Hoosier State to play some hoops.

This is a huge game for the Cavs, finally playing some respectable talent. (the last time they did this, they got pounded by the Spurs)

Being from Indianapolis, this is my biggest game of the season thus far. The Cavs win, I get some respect (a little) for the time being. They lose, and I'm treated like vermin until the Cavs show 'em up in the Playoffs.

I don't really have a feeling for either team. I was a bit preoccupied with the triple overtime between Michigan St. and Gonzaga.

Despite my thoughts, the Cavaliers roll on to win their 8th straight, and remain undefeated at The Q. Maybe we should have changed the Gund's name a long time ago...

LeBron busted out with 36 points, and Hughes followed with 25. Drew Gooden also helped out with a double-double (his fifth on the season).

Unfortunately, Damon Jones sprained his ankle last night, there's no word yet as to how long he'll be out. There's nothing working for us, or against us, but that fact will probably hurt us tonight.

The last several games, we've had fate on our side. Whether it was our opponents' overloaded schedule, injuries, or lack of a bench, we have had the upper hand.

I almost feel that the Cavaliers don't exactly know that they were the better team in the last 7 games. Towards the end of the five minute discussion, however, Dilfer was asked how he felt about Charlie Frye playing.

His response? "I completely disagree. The coach is taking away my rythm. This isn't college football. Rythm is very important. Nothing good can come from taking me out of the game like that."

If you've got that kinda stuff to say... keep it to yourself. How do you think Frye feels about this? On the Droughens Bandwagon!!!

If you're weren't on it before, you should be now. The Browns SHUT OUT the Dolphins with a final score of 22-0.

Play of the Game: 1st play of the game, Reuban Droughnes runs for 75 yards and a touchdown. He ended up with 166 yards.

Dilfer had a fairly good game, but it was kinda hard to tell how good because Charlie Frye played 3 possesions. Yes. Charlie Frye. Why? No one knows. I guess just to get his feet wet. He went 6/11 for 58 yards with one interception. (Not his fault at all)

Braylon Edwards, as predicted, finally got into the game, as he had 6 receptions for 90 yards. Actually, the whole Browns receiving corps. was pulling down some spectacular grabs. Bryant and Heiden combined for 8 catches and 91 yards.

And as you can tell from the scoreboard, the defense did a spectacular job, even if it was against a horrible passing game. Things are at long last starting to look up for Cleveland football.

Your turn. I've been talking about this game all week. Browns favored by 2. Let's recap.

The Dolphins starting quarterback has an injured index finger on his throwing hand. He is projected to start anyways. Our linebackers need to blitz him all day in order to add rushed decisions to his hindered throwing capabilities.

Don't expect the Dolphins to go deep much today.

On our side, I expect Dilfer to explode for a great game today. He's been steadily improving, I thing this could be his week to break out.

Braylon should get more playing time after complaining to Coaching Staff. Expect the two to hook up more than a couple times.

Barn-Burner at The Q

Cavs win. I don't know. Just down in my gut... I don't feel it.

But, to keep this entry optimistic, just for you and your beacon of hope we call the Cavaliers, Let's look at the facts...

Both teams have extremely powerful offenses, and are climbing in the power rankings. So, it's probably going to come down to defense, the bench, and some schedule luck.

From what I've seen this season, we have the upper hand in the defense category.

The Sixers have played more games this week. That, compiled with the fact that the Sixers top 3 scorers all average over 38 minutes per game, would seem to benefit us. (No one on the Cavs plays that much)

Thus, they have no one to stop us late in the game.

Look for a close one, but despite my bad feelings, watch the Cavs pull away in the 4th quarter.

Dolphins Starting QB

Nick Saben has not released who will be the Dolphin's starting quarterback yet, though it is known that their current starter, Gus Frerotte, has a sprained index finger (yes, on his throwing hand).

It is known that he has rejoined the practice squad, and is officially listed as "probable" for the game.

Hmm... With Hughes and James becoming more and more comfortable with each other, it's hard to imagine us losing our momentum to a struggling team like the Magic (4-3). Especially at The Q. And after a few days' rest.

My plan? Let's go up big and go up early to give our bench some playing time. That is easily what this team needs the most. For Hughes. He scored 22 points and dished out eight assists while holding his former teamate to a measly 2-12 shooting performance through the first three quarters. Teamed with LeBron's 37 point, 10 rebound night, the Cavs powered to a 114-99 win at home. It was their 4th straight home win.

Is this just a good home streak you ask? Of course not. How is any team going to defend against this tandem? When you get 50 points out of two players, nearly every game, against any team, no one will be able to compete.

Am I saying championship team? Maybe. It depends on several things. I hope to God there aren't any injuries. But other than that, we need our bench to kick in. Luke Jackson and Damon Jones need to pick up their weight. That's rediculous. The Cavaliers set their franchise record by out-rebounding the sonics 56-21 Wednesday night. Needless to say, they went on to demolish the Supersonics 112-85.

Luke Jackson made his first solid appearance since replacing Sasha Pavlovic in the 9-man lineup. In his 15 minutes on the floor, he whipped out 5 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals. Talk about workin' for your job.

As you all know, the Browns have a big game for them and for the fans, as they take on the hated Steelers this weekend. Romeo Crennel says defense is the key. "We give up too many yards on the field," said Crennel. "But as we improve, I think you'll see the yardage cut down, which will improve our chances of being able to win a game with defense alone."

If there is a time to kick a dog though, it's when it's down. And the Steelers definitely are. Missing two major components, of their offense, Roethlisberger and Bettis, don't expect to see the smooth offense of past weeks.

As a former Steeler, Orpheus Roye knows first-hand how Pittsburgh handles injuries. "They're going to stick to their game plan. They're not going to put the game in [Batch's] hands. They're going to run the ball, try to get a lead and just minimize his passes."

It'd be a great time for Crennel's 3-4 Defense to kick in.

Time for Some Catch-up

Sorry for the long break, I've been real busy over the past month, but I'm ready to get back to work now. A lot has happened since my last post, so today will just be some catchup, and we'll start on the real stuff tomorrow.

Cavs season started last week. After a strong showing against the Hornets, they dropped two games to the Spurs and Grizzlies. However, no team in the Eastern Conference has come out on all cylinders, so it would appear that for now... All is well on the Eastern Front.

Big win for the Browns Sunday. After losing to the (formerly) winless Texans, they really needed to bounce back against the Titans, and did just that.

I really am starting to see some good stuff on offense. Reuban's on pace for 1,300 yards, and Dilfer's starting to throw deep a little more often... Things might be starting to jell now. To bad it had to happen now, as we have a tough, possibly momentum-losing game against the Steelers this weekend.

Good Times, Bad Times

Good News: Braylon Edwards is out of the hospital. Cavaliers now 2-0 in pre-season.
Bad News: He won't be back for 4-6 weeks. LeBron has strained pectoral muscle.

As it turns out though, Braylon's father is feeling optimistic. When mentioning his son's 4 week recovery period, Stan Edwards stated, "don't hold him to that. He's doing much better, though. This could have been much worse."

The Cavaliers took it to the Celtics in a pre-season matchup yesterday despite missing LeBron. He was out with a pectoral muscle strain. Luke Jackson is really starting to come through, as he led the team with 14 points and his second consecutive good game.

The entire league is starting to get the feeling that this isn't a one-man show anymore, and that these guys have a legitimate shot at a post-season run. The the infection's culture is being analyzed now, and the final verdict should be out tomorrow. Ben Taylor, one of our linebackers, suffered from a Staph infection in the middle of the 2003 season, and did not start another game that season.

For more on this story, read up on the article in the Plain Dealer here.

The Kellen Winslow contract is nearing finalization. It signs Winslow through the 2010 season and allows him to regain much of the bonus money lost during the motorcycle accident. This is a huge momentum shift in our favor heading into Baltimore. I'm not going to make any predictions yet, but with a win against the Ravens, the Browns really could have a shot at a good season. Other than that division game, we have battles against the Lions, Texans, and Titans. All of these teams have struggled lately.

With a few wins strung together, the Browns could really get into a nice groove. Maybe an 8-8 season? Our entire season depends on these next several games.

Shifting gears... did anyone know Braylon Edwards was injured before the game started? I know I sure didn't. It came as a complete shock to me, and there's been no word as to how long he will be out. There's even been rumors of a Staph Infection. He underwent surgery today to treat it, and hopefully can be back next week. We definitely need him during these crucial, coming weeks.

Browns vs. Bears

First off... as a nice farewell to the Tribe's 2005 run, I found a nice article on their many achievements throughout the season here.

The Browns have already faced two legendary QB's in Peyton and Favre. Granted, neither brought their A-game, but the Browns handled them both reasonably well. This week we will be tested yet again. Not by the opposing QB, but by ourselves. The Bears packing a 4th-round rookie in the QB slot, and it's up to the Brown's defense to not take him lightly.

The Browns are searching for an oppurtunity to prove their defense to themselves, the fans, and all of the NFL. Orton, similarly, is looking for a chance to prove himself as the Heisman candidate he was towards the beginning of last year. However, if we can keep our heads in the game, we should be able to stifle his passing, and the Bears chances at winning.

My call: 20-16 Browns.

Start It Up

I'll start out this blog with a quick introduction... My name is Dan Fetter, a diehard Cleveland fan, though I reside in Indianapolis. This is actually one of the main reasons for this blog, I have few people with to discuss Cleveland sports with, and decided to take to the web in order to gain some conversation. But enough about me...

Tough loss for the Tribe over the last week. Losing six of your last seven games and still barely missing the playoffs isn't exactly riveting. Our pitchers actually rose to the occasion, but... when you only bat .116 with runners in scoring position, you're not going to win many games. Fantastic season though. You can't complain when the team makes strides of improvement. The league's gonna have to watch out for the Cleveland Indians for the next few years.

Browns had a bye this week, obviously, so there's not too much to report in that department right now. The Cavaliers, however, are definitely going to be a contender this year with the long-range additions of Hughes and Jones. That's exactly what we've been missing... the Three.

Enough catch up... Now the concentration goes on the team's updates from here on out.
